Leonhard Euler (1707-1783) is one of the greatest scientists of all times in the field of mathematics and mechanics. It is largely through his work mathematical analysis (including the theory of differential equations and the calculus of variations) came into being during the 18th century, the whole rational mechanics and, particularly, rigid body mechanics and the hydrodynamics of an ideal fluid became established and the language and style of modern scientific literature was created. The following essay gives a Leonhard Euler’s biographical sketch, a short general review of his work and a more detailed analysis of his contribution to the formation of rational mechanics
